Collapsed Saloon Under Stone Arch in Brazzaville Rainy Season

by Jerome Kerr

Soft, diffused light falls through the canopy of a broken stone arch, illuminating the skeletal remains of a saloon where the second floor has collapsed inward. The structure stands in the humid grip of the rainy season, with fresh green moss creeping across weathered timber beams and damp earth filling the lower rooms. Layers of depth recede from the jagged roofline toward a distant, clear horizon under a perfectly blue sky. Water stains mark the vertical surfaces of the remaining walls, creating dark streaks against the pale, peeling paint. One broken window frame hangs by one hinge, its glass long gone, revealing the hollow interior where shadows pool deeply against the back wall. The texture of rotting wood contrasts sharply with the rough, ancient stone of the arch above.
