Cold War Silo Door Open Roofless Hammam in inside a roofless hammam near Kitwe

Cold War Silo Door Open Roofless Hammam

by Yuki Padilla

Reflected light from an unseen pool illuminates the rusted steel of a massive blast door standing slightly ajar within a roofless hammam structure near Kitwe. The cool season air leaves the metal surfaces with a dull, oxidized sheen, contrasting against the dry, reddish earth of the surrounding ruins. Dramatic, heavy clouds fill the sky above the open roof, casting shifting shadows across the concrete walls that have lost their plaster. Layers of depth recede from the heavy industrial door into the crumbling masonry of the bathhouse, where water stains mark the lower stones. One patch of bright sky reflects on the wet ground just inside the threshold, highlighting the texture of peeling paint on the door's edge.
