Milky Way Over Libyan Sunflower Field at Night in from a dune-backed overlook in clear desert air in Libya

Milky Way Over Libyan Sunflower Field at Night

by Leon Cook

Golden sunflowers fill the foreground, their large heads angled downward against the deep black of the night. The sky above displays a dense band of stars and the bright, diffuse glow of the Milky Way stretching diagonally across the frame. Low on the horizon, a thin layer of gray haze blurs the boundary between the dark desert dunes and the atmosphere. Starlight illuminates the pale yellow petals of the nearest flowers, revealing their textured surfaces while the rest of the field remains in shadow. Behind the crop, the dark silhouettes of sand dunes rise gently into the star-filled void. A bright star near the bottom edge reflects faintly off a dew-covered petal.
