Ferns Growing in Turkmenistan Abandoned Court Ruins

by Tanya Murray

Soft midmorning light falls through the archway of an abandoned ceremonial court in Turkmenistan, illuminating a sanctuary of vibrant green ferns reclaiming the stone floor. After a brief sun shower, water droplets rest on the fronds and glisten on the weathered limestone blocks. The stone walls, carved with faint geometric patterns, frame the lush vegetation growing in the center. Dry patches of earth mix with the damp moss near the base of the pillars. A fallen column segment rests against the rear wall, its rough texture against the delicate, unfurling leaves of the young ferns. The light catches the wet edge of a stone lintel, highlighting the erosion marks left by years of exposure.
