Surreal Staircase in Turkmen Wheat Field After Rain

by Patrick Berg

Dark, wet soil marks a path beside a tractor track in a late autumn Turkmen wheat field. Bright midmorning light reflects off irrigation water shimmering between the rows. A worn, smooth path leads to a concrete landing where two staircases emerge simultaneously: one ascends into the golden sky, while the other descends into the dark earth. The impossible geometry casts sharp, consistent shadows on the damp ground. Golden wheat stalks surround the structure, their tips wet with recent rain. The staircase railing is rusted iron, against the smooth, worn stone steps. One boot print remains filled with clear water on the lower step.
