Autumn Light on Ottoman Caravanserai Ruins Near Makhachkala

by Larry Blake

Pale golden sunrise washes over the fractured stone arches of an abandoned Ottoman caravanserai near Makhachkala. The courtyard opens directly to a cloudless sky, revealing layers of crumbling masonry that recede into the distance. Tall nettles and dry autumn grasses push through cracks in the weathered floor, their brown and ochre hues mirroring the fading leaves on nearby branches. Toppled columns lie scattered across the ground, their fluted surfaces catching the low angle of the morning sun. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the uneven terrain, showing the texture of eroded limestone. A fragment of carved stonework rests against a broken pillar, its intricate details softened by decades of exposure.
