Crumbling Border Checkpoint Ruin Eswatini

by Brody Craig

Orange low-angle light washes over a decaying border checkpoint standing among toppled stone columns and thick nettles. A rusted barrier arm hangs raised permanently against a sky dimming into twilight. Humid air hangs heavy after recent rain, making the concrete surfaces glisten with dark moisture while the reddish earth absorbs the fading sun. Moss rests on the fractured base of a broken pillar, and vines creep up the side of the remaining wall. The scene is framed by the gap between two leaning stones, focusing attention on the solitary metal gate. A wet puddle reflects the orange sky directly beneath the suspended barrier arm.
