Surreal Swing Bridge Ruin with Flowering Concrete

by Avery Turner

Honeyed evening light washes over a derelict swing bridge mechanism frozen at a sharp, impossible angle. The rusted iron girders rest against toppled stone columns surrounded by swaying green nettles. Bright orange low-angle sun casts long, distorted shadows across the wet, uneven ground. In a striking contradiction to the decay, clusters of vivid white and yellow flowers erupt directly from cracks in the gray concrete base and jagged metal surfaces. The wind whips the tall grass and bends the bridge's heavy chains. Raindrops glisten on the oxidized steel, highlighting the texture of the rust. at the edge shows a single orange petal resting on the cold, wet metal of the seized hinge.
