Crumbled Lock Gates in Kenya Evening Rain

by Theodore Livingston

Honeyed evening light spills across the rusted steel and water-logged timber of a collapsing canal lock. The massive gates hang askew, their rotted planks peeling away to reveal the dark, swollen wood beneath. A fine drizzle coats the wet concrete surfaces, turning the stone gray and slick. Heavy shadows lengthen across the base of the structure where the water meets the crumbling masonry. Beside the lock, the smooth curve of a storm surge barrier rises in the distance, its modern lines against the decay of the wooden machinery. Raindrops bead on the jagged edges of the broken timber, catching the fading gold of the sun before nightfall fully claims the sky. The final visible detail is a single rivulet of water tracing a path down the fractured side of the gate.
