Corroded Dairy Tanks in Sudan Vine Corridor

by Jordyn Shaffer

Bright midday sunlight silhouettes two massive stainless steel tanks, their surfaces now turned into rough, rust-brown sheets. Vines with broad green leaves choke the narrow corridor surrounding the industrial remains, wrapping tight around the curved metal and climbing the rusted joints. The wet season air leaves the foliage glossy and deep emerald against the dull orange decay of the steel. No machinery hums; only the heavy, silent weight of abandonment hangs in the clear sky. Shadows fall sharply beneath the tanks, at the base of the scene in the heat of the Sudanese afternoon. One vine tendril rests on the lowest rusted seam.
