Faded Drive-In Screen Among Ruins

by Oscar Raymond

Deep shadow cloaks a massive, weathered white screen standing alone in a North Korean field. Before sunrise, a thin rim of cold light traces the screen's top edge, separating it from the encroaching dark. Surrounding the structure, toppled stone columns lie half-buried in frost-covered nettles and dry winter grass. A pale fog hangs low, softening the base of the screen and the scattered masonry. The white surface shows a network of fine cracks and gray stains where the paint has peeled away. The ground remains still and frozen under the muted dawn glow. One jagged piece of concrete rests near the screen's corner, catching the faintest hint of the rising sun.
