Rust on Tanks in Tennessee Stone Ruins

by Sam McLean

Late afternoon sun falls through autumn leaves, casting dappled patterns across the interior of a roofless stone chamber in Tennessee. Three large stainless steel dairy tanks stand corroded, their surfaces eaten away by brown oxidation and peeling paint. A thin layer of fog rests on the low stone walls, softening the edges of the masonry. Green moss spreads across the damp ground, creeping up the base of the metal vessels where they meet the earth. Fallen oak leaves litter the floor, resting against the warped metal feet of the tanks. A jagged stone archway frames the view, cutting a dark silhouette against the pale mist outside. at the edge is a flake of rust falling from the tank rim onto a pile of dry leaves below.
