Ivy Wrapped Stair Tower Ruin South Sudan in in South Sudan

Ivy Wrapped Stair Tower Ruin South Sudan

by Stacy Howard

Deep shadow swallows the lower levels of a crumbling concrete stair tower while the first light of dawn carves a sharp rim along the upper edges. Thick ivy climbs the fractured walls, its wet leaves glistening with trapped moisture from the rainy season. Layers of the structure recede into the distance, creating a tunnel of decaying concrete and tangled greenery. The damp air hangs heavy between the stones, visible as a faint haze clinging to the rough, pitted surfaces. Water stains streak down the gray masonry, marking the path of recent downpours. Moss patches rest on the shadowed corners, softening the hard geometry of the ruin. One vine stem stretches across a broken step, its tip resting against a jagged piece of exposed rebar.
