Abandoned Diving Boards Before Dawn in Abidjan

by Constance Kaufman

A sweeping beam of pale light cuts across the rusted metal diving boards of a derelict swimming pavilion near Abidjan. The cool season air ripples through the sparse vegetation reclaiming the concrete deck, while wind whips the thinning leaves of nearby trees. Orange flakes of corrosion coat the steel supports, against the dark, wet stone of the surrounding ground. The sky remains a deep, indigo grey, hinting at the still hours before sunrise. Shadows stretch long and thin across the broken tiles, revealing the jagged edges where the structure has begun to crumble. One, frayed rope hangs loosely from a rusted hook, swaying slightly in the breeze against the backdrop of the dark horizon.
