Cave Dwelling in Göreme Before Dawn in inside a vaulted atrium in Göreme

Cave Dwelling in Göreme Before Dawn

by Darryl Stanton

Cool gray shadows fill the vaulted atrium of a Cappadocian cave house, where rough-hewn volcanic rock walls curve upward into a high ceiling. A thin line of pale morning light cuts across the upper arch, rimming the dark stone edges with a faint silver glow. In the center, a shallow pool of still water mirrors the cavernous space above, duplicating the arched doorway and the texture of the tufa. Late autumn is visible in the sparse, dried grasses placed near the stone threshold. The smooth surface of the water reflects the deep ochre tones of the rock, creating a perfect vertical symmetry. A rough-hewn wooden beam rests horizontally against the back wall, its grain dark and distinct against the lighter stone.
