Whitewashed Cave House Vaulted Atrium Ürgüp in inside a vaulted atrium in Ürgüp

Whitewashed Cave House Vaulted Atrium Ürgüp

by Emilio McCarthy

Soft, diffused light fills the vaulted atrium of a whitewashed cave house in Ürgüp, highlighting the rough texture of eroded volcanic rock beneath the plaster. Low-hanging clouds outside the high openings cast a cool, gray tone over the damp, smooth floor. In early summer, moisture remains visible as a sheen on the curved walls. Shadows stretch across the stone floor where the vault meets the earth. A small patch of dried moss rests on the base of the western arch, marking the edge of the damp zone. The white plaster peels slightly near the ceiling, exposing the dark, porous rock underneath.
