Cappadocian Fairy Chimney Cave Dwelling After Rain

by Lola Hogan

Pale tuff stone rises from the wet floodplain floor, its eroded form capped by a darker, harder rock layer. A rough wooden door sits centered in the natural archway, against the smooth, rain-slicked surfaces of the surrounding rock. The ground is a patchwork of dark mud and scattered stones, reflecting the bright, tropical midday sun that breaks through passing clouds. Raindrops rest on the edges of the rock formations, catching light in sharp highlights. The sky above shifts between white cloud cover and patches of intense blue. In the distance, flat plains stretch out, dotted with smaller rock spires that fade into the humid haze. The wet earth absorbs the light, creating deep shadows beneath the overhangs of the chimney structure. One water droplet hangs from the corner of the wooden lintel, ready to fall.
