Dripping Stalactite in Burgundy Winter Valley

by Penelope Hodge

Rain-slicked limestone surfaces glisten under the diffuse gray light of a late winter afternoon. A thick stalactite hangs prominently from the cave ceiling, its rough, porous texture against the smooth, continuous water droplet elongating from its tip. Outside the cave mouth, the valley floor stretches wide and flat, covered in dormant brown grass and scattered bare branches. The air carries the visual weight of steady rain, blurring the distant tree line into soft gray shapes. Water beads along the jagged edges of the rock face, reflecting the overcast sky. The low angle emphasizes the vertical drop of the formation against the horizontal expanse of the valley beyond.
