Cappadocian Cave House Atrium at Sunset in inside a vaulted atrium near Nevşehir

Cappadocian Cave House Atrium at Sunset

by Carol Pollard

Rough, porous tufa walls define a vaulted atrium carved directly into the earth near Nevşehir. Late summer light slants low through an opening, tracing sharp, elongated shadows across the uneven stone floor. The ceiling curves overhead in a smooth, natural arch, its texture marked by centuries of erosion. Low-hanging clouds outside cast a muted, gray light that competes with the warm glow of the setting sun. Deep shadows pool in the corners, showing the hollow depth of the space. A narrow ledge along the right wall holds a small, dark ceramic bowl, catching a thin line of reflected light. The air is still, visible only in the dust settling on the rough surface.
