Dripping Stalactite in Predawn Western Australia Cave in from a ridge above layered foothills in Western Australia

Dripping Stalactite in Predawn Western Australia Cave

by Duane Walters

A sharp, crystalline stalactite hangs from the rough limestone ceiling, its tip glistening with a heavy droplet of water poised to fall. Deep shadow envelops the cave interior, save for a faint rim light that traces the jagged edges of the rock formations. Outside the cave mouth, layered foothills stretch across the horizon in muted grey tones, their slopes defined by the pale, pre-dawn sky. Snowflakes drift slowly through the air, catching the dim light as they descend toward the dark ground below. The scene remains motionless, the air heavy with the quiet weight of falling snow against the ancient stone. The water droplet on the stalactite tip reflects a sliver of the grey sky above.
