Cave House Atrium in Cappadocia Monsoon Light

by Larry Lowe

Sunlight falls through dense monsoon foliage, casting dappled patterns across the rough, honey-colored tuff walls of a vaulted atrium carved directly into a fairy chimney. The natural rock surface shows deep vertical erosion marks and smooth, rounded corners where water has shaped the stone over centuries. A narrow stone staircase ascends along the left wall, its steps worn by generations of foot traffic. Above, the high vaulted ceiling disappears into shadow, showing the cavernous scale of the space. Dark storm clouds loom outside the irregular opening, their gray bulk against the warm, sunlit interior. One shaft of bright light hits the floor, illuminating dust particles suspended in the air and highlighting the texture of the volcanic rock against the cool, damp shadows of the corner.
