Carved Stone Columns in Kotri Ceremonial Hall

by Tessa Hanson

Soft, diffused afternoon light falls through the high openings of a rock-hewn hall in Kotri, illuminating rough-hewn stone surfaces that have absorbed the recent rain. Massive columns carved directly from the living rock rise to support the ceiling, their surfaces textured with the chisel marks of ancient hands. The air is clear and still, casting long, soft shadows that stretch across the damp, uneven floor. Layers of stone arches recede into the distance, creating a deep sense of scale within the enclosed space. Dust motes float in the beams of light, settling gently on the carved capitals. at the edge is a small, dark pool of water gathering in the shallow groove of the lowest stone step.
