Silhouetted Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony in Prayer Hall

by Martin Swain

Honeyed evening light floods the interior of a stone prayer hall near Lalibela, casting the figures of a coffee ceremony into deep silhouette. Three dark shapes stand against the glowing opening: a tall clay jebena rests on a low brazier, its spout angled upward, while two small cups sit on a woven mat nearby. Low-hanging clouds outside diffuse the sunset into a soft, warm haze that outlines the rough texture of the volcanic stone walls. The figures remain still, their forms defined only by the bright rim of light tracing their shoulders and the curved neck of the pot. A faint wisp of smoke curls from the coals, caught in the golden beam. at the edge is the rough, uneven edge of the stone threshold where the floor meets the light.
