Ethiopian Church Cliff in Bogotá Hall Twilight

by Penelope Arias

Red sandstone rock walls emerge from the dark interior of a ceremonial hall, mimicking the ancient monolithic churches of Lalibela. String lights hang in loose arcs across the high ceiling, casting warm amber pools on the rough-hewn stone surfaces. The cliff face dominates the left side, its vertical striations deepening in shadow as twilight bleeds through unseen openings. Layers of stone arches recede into the distance, creating a tunnel of carved earth and rock. The air remains still, holding the texture of dust and dry stone. One beam of fading blue sky reflects off a polished metal tray resting on a low wooden table in the foreground corner.
