Ethiopian Rock Church in Bogotá Hall Dusk

by Sean Porter

Deep orange sodium light washes the rough, red cliff face carved with deep recesses and narrow archways. The structure emerges from the shadow of a high indoor ceiling, its stone texture highlighted by the warm, flickering glow. Low-hanging, gray clouds drift across the upper portion of the cavernous space, partially obscuring the top of the carved facade. From behind, the silhouette of a solitary figure stands on the red earth floor, facing the ancient masonry. The winter air hangs heavy, visible as a faint haze between the stone and the low cloud layer. Dust motes swirl in the single beam of light falling across the rough-hewn entrance.
