Ethiopian Church Lanterns Night Kinshasa in in a shrine lined with lanterns in Kinshasa

Ethiopian Church Lanterns Night Kinshasa

by Monica Hendricks

Stone walls carved from dark volcanic rock rise in the cool night air, their rough surfaces catching the warm glow of hanging string lights. Small paper lanterns line the shrine's interior, casting soft amber pools on the uneven floor. Low-hanging clouds drift outside the open archways, their grey mass pressing close against the deep black sky. The architecture features traditional Ethiopian rock-hewn geometry, with rounded columns and recessed niches holding small clay pots. Dust motes settle on the stone steps, illuminated by the flickering light. One lantern sways slightly, its reflection shimmering on the damp, polished stone surface near the entrance.
