Rock-Hewn Church Ethiopian Highlands Blue Hour in in a ceremonial hall near Asyut

Rock-Hewn Church Ethiopian Highlands Blue Hour

by Brian Franklin

Rough-hewn stone walls define a ceremonial hall carved directly from the earth, their surfaces pitted and uneven under the soft glow of string lights. The air hangs heavy with midsummer moisture as a light drizzle wets the dark, reddish-brown rock, turning the texture into a slick, reflective skin. Warm yellow bulbs strung across the ceiling cast pools of light that fight against the deepening blue twilight filtering in from the entrance. Layers of the cavernous interior recede into shadow, revealing rough chisel marks and the raw, unpolished grain of the rock face. One droplet slides slowly down a vertical stone pillar, catching the string light before disappearing into the damp gloom.
