Rock-hewn church columns in Hobart temple courtyard

by Theresa Cline

Grey stone columns carved from solid rock rise within a temple courtyard in Hobart, their rough-hewn surfaces catching the flat, grey light of a heavy overcast sky. The late afternoon sun, diffused by thick clouds, reflects softly off a nearby body of water, casting a cool, silvery sheen on the weathered masonry. Dry, brittle grass patches the ground between the stone structures, indicating the dry season. The carved details of the arches and pillars show deep, hand-chiseled grooves that hold shadows in their crevices. Dust settles on the flat tops of the capitals, undisturbed by wind. One beam of reflected light from the water illuminates the base of the nearest column, highlighting the transition from rough stone to the smooth, damp pavement.
