Deep shadow engulfs the massive steel canal lock gate as it closes over still green water. First light of dawn strikes only the upper edges, casting a sharp rim of silver against the dark metal. The gate stands beneath a windy overpass interchange, where vibrating air distorts the view of nearby transformers and cables. Dry season dust settles on the concrete surfaces, highlighting the rough texture of the infrastructure. The low angle emphasizes the sheer scale of the gate against the pale sky. A thin line of reflected light runs along the water's edge where the steel meets the green surface.
