Bittern Camouflaged in Bogota Reed Bed

by Rita Leonard

Low-hanging gray clouds press against the horizon above the reed bed near Usaquen, Bogota, casting a soft, diffused glow across the water. A bittern stands motionless among the tall, dry stalks, its striped brown and buff plumage merging seamlessly with the surrounding vegetation. The late afternoon light reflects off the calm surface, creating a shimmering path of silver that highlights the bird's sharp, yellow eye. The reeds sway slightly, their brittle tips catching the cool air of the season. The bird's long neck stretches upward, blending with the vertical lines of the grass. At the edge of the frame, a single droplet of water clings to a reed tip, catching the reflected light.
