Maned Wolf in Panama Reed Bed Fog

by Nina Kramer

Muted greens and browns dominate the wet reed bed where a maned wolf stands alert in Panama's cool season. Dappled sunlight falls through the canopy above, creating shifting patches of brightness on the animal's reddish coat and the slick, dark stalks surrounding it. A light fog hangs low over the ground, softening the background reeds into a hazy wash of color. The wolf's breath forms a visible, pale cloud that drifts briefly before vanishing into the damp air. Water droplets rest on the tips of the reeds, catching the light like tiny diamonds. The animal's long, black legs are planted firmly in the mud, its ears swiveled forward to catch the faint rustle of the wet grass. one drop of water slides from a reed tip, landing silently on the leafy floor beside its paw.
