Wood Duck Amid Rain and Lily Pads in Peru in along a game trail in Peru

Wood Duck Amid Rain and Lily Pads in Peru

by Freda Hays

Flat noon light washes the surface of a Peruvian stream where steady rain drives a constant pattern of silver ripples. A wood duck moves forward through the water, its iridescent green head and chestnut breast visible above the choppy surface. Broad, waxy lily pads cluster around the bird, their edges curling slightly under the weight of falling drops. Water beads roll rapidly across the leaves and merge into the stream below. The low angle positions the view directly at the waterline, placing the duck against a backdrop of dark water and green vegetation. Raindrops strike the pads, sending fine mist upward from the impact points.
