Chameleon Changing Colors on Reed Stalk at Dusk in at the edge of a reed bed near Salvador

Chameleon Changing Colors on Reed Stalk at Dusk

by Jose Skinner

Copper-toned light from the setting sun wraps the edge of a Salvador reed bed, illuminating a chameleon perched on a slender stalk. Soft haze hangs in the wet season air around green and rust-colored fronds. The reptile's skin ripples with a slow transition of hues, shifting from mossy greens to deep ochres that mirror the drying reeds beside it. Its large, independent eye scans the surroundings with predatory stillness while the horizon light casts long, soft shadows across the muddy bank. The texture of the bark beneath its claws is rough and dark, against the smooth, wet sheen of the surrounding vegetation. Light catches the curve of its tail, glowing faintly against the darkening marsh.
