Bioluminescent Reef Edge Tracing Crescent Bay in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Cairns

Bioluminescent Reef Edge Tracing Crescent Bay

by Maxine Curtis

Turquoise tropical water fills the frame beneath a shallow reef ledge near Cairns. A continuous, glowing ribbon of bioluminescence traces the jagged edge of the coral reef, curving gently along the crescent bay. The light source appears as soft blue-green pulses moving slowly against the dark rock. Sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear water from above, creating a bright, open daylight scene. Fine sand covers the bay floor while surface ripples distort the light into shifting patterns overhead. The water remains still, holding the luminous trail steady against the textured coral. One strand of glowing plankton drifts past a rough coral spine.
