Aerial View of Desert Cinder Cones and Salt Ponds

by Maya Bolton

Bright midsummer sun flattens the landscape beneath a perfectly clear sky, casting short, sharp shadows across a vast expanse of volcanic cinder cones. The cones rise in irregular clusters from the arid desert floor, their rough, reddish-brown surfaces against the pale, chalky ground. Below the elevated viewpoint, rectangular salt ponds stretch across the terrain, their still surfaces reflecting the harsh overhead light in patches of brilliant white and soft blue. Man-made causeways cut straight lines through the natural formations, dividing the ponds into geometric sections. The scale is immense, with the small, rounded cones appearing like scattered gravel against the vastness of the salt flats. A fine layer of dust coats the lower slopes of the cones, settling into the crevices between the rocks.
