Copper-toned light spills over a grid of rectangular salt ponds stretching across the flat terrain near Makhachkala. Directly above, the water reflects the dramatic clouds, creating a mosaic of deep blues, whites, and shimmering gold. Straight causeways cut through the ponds in perfect geometric lines, separating the crystallizing pools from the surrounding earth. The midsummer sun casts long, soft shadows that emphasize the texture of the salt crusts and the stillness of the water. Dark green patches of vegetation border the industrial grid, against the pale, mineral surfaces. The perspective reveals the immense scale of human engineering harmonizing with the natural horizon. One white cloud edge catches the last light, casting a sharp shadow across a rectangular basin.
