Aerial View of Nomadic Camp on Salt Ponds

by Preston O'Donnell

Mist hangs low over a vast expanse of salt ponds and narrow causeways in Malaysia. From high above, a small cluster of temporary shelters sits on the water's edge, surrounded by the geometric grid of drying beds. The late afternoon light diffuses through thick fog, softening the contrast between the white salt crusts and the dark, wet earth of the walkways. Layers of rectangular ponds recede into the distance, creating a patterned map of shallow water and drying surfaces. The nomadic structures appear as small, dark shapes against the pale, textured ground, their simple forms defined by the shadows they cast on the damp soil. A narrow channel of water reflects the grey sky between two rows of salt piles.
