Abandoned Hammam Ruins Reclaimed by Cactus

by Jade Kaufman

Pale limestone blocks form the skeletal remains of a roofless hammam near Kuşadası, where the late afternoon sun bounces off distant water to cast a cool, silver sheen across the stone. Thin layers of fog drift through the open archways, softening the edges of crumbling walls and the jagged silhouettes of prickly pear cacti pushing up through the dry, cracked earth. The turn of seasons leaves the vegetation in a state of transition, with some pads turning a dusty red while others remain a muted green. Rough textures of weathered masonry contrast with the waxy, spiny surfaces of the succulents growing in the shadows. One shadow falls across a broken tile floor, marking the boundary between the dry interior and the hazy light outside. The scene holds a quiet stillness, defined by the mix of light and stone.
