Frozen Lightning Over Roofless Hammam Ruins in inside a roofless hammam near Mashhad

Frozen Lightning Over Roofless Hammam Ruins

by Priscilla Rutledge

Pearl fog drifts through the open arches of a roofless hammam near Mashhad, softening the weathered brickwork of the late summer ruin. Reflected light from a shallow pool on the floor illuminates the damp stone surfaces with a cool, silvery sheen. Above the crumbling walls, a jagged bolt of lightning hangs frozen in the clear late-afternoon sky, its branching veins of electric blue stark against the pale haze. Birds hover motionless in the air, their wings suspended mid-flap within the mist. The ancient stone columns stand solid and sharp, at the base of the impossible electrical storm in a tangible, quiet historical space. One shard of glass on the wet floor catches the frozen lightning's glow.
