Ziggurat Ruin in South Sudan Vine Corridor

by Marie Hoffman

Honeyed evening light spills across a stepped pyramid structure that sits incongruously within a dense, vine-choked corridor in South Sudan. The ancient stone blocks, weathered by time, rise in tiered layers against a backdrop of low-hanging, wet-season clouds. Thick green vines drape heavily over the masonry, their leaves glistening with recent moisture. The low camera angle emphasizes the monument's imposing height as it pierces the humid air. Horizon light wraps around the edges of the stone, casting soft shadows that reveal the rough texture of the eroded surfaces. Moss rests on the crevices between the steps, blending the man-made geometry with the relentless growth of the jungle. at the edge is a single vine tendril curling around the corner of the lowest stone tier.
