Melting Fire Tower Ruin Lusaka Dawn in inside a roofless nave near Lusaka

Melting Fire Tower Ruin Lusaka Dawn

by Arlene Zimmerman

Mist rests on the roofless nave near Lusaka as a derelict fire tower leans eastward under the weight of monsoon rain. The wooden observation cabin does not merely tilt; its structure flows like heated wax, softening into a viscous pool at the base where it meets the damp earth. Diffused dawn light falls through the heavy gray sky, highlighting the glossy, dripping texture of the melting timber against the rough, moss-covered stone foundation. Water droplets hang suspended in the air from a passing sun shower, catching the pale light. The vertical lines of the tower bend and curve into the ground, defying gravity while the surrounding vegetation remains rigid and sharp. A final bead of wood-sap slides slowly down a warped beam, marking the edge of the impossible decay.
