Crumbling Stair Ruin in Vine-Choked Lanzhou Corridor

by Rosalie Walsh

Gray stone steps cut directly into a steep hillside show deep erosion from centuries of exposure. Thick green vines drape heavily over the crumbling masonry, their leaves wet and glistening under the midday sky. A fine mist of light drizzle coats the rough texture of the weathered rock, turning the surface a darker, saturated gray. Moss patches rest on the crevices between the worn treads, softening the harsh angles of the ancient cut. The corridor narrows as it recedes, creating layers of depth where the stone fades into the humid background air. Water droplets bead on the broad leaves, sliding slowly down the vines toward the damp earth below. at the edge is a single crack running vertically through the lowest step, filled with a dark, wet sediment.
