Stepped Pyramid Rising in Rio Jungle

by Leonard Flowers

Sunlight bleaches the stone blocks of a stepped pyramid rising from dense green foliage under the harsh glare of noon. The structure stands weather-beaten, its gray surfaces against the vibrant emerald canopy that creeps up its sides. Moss clings to crevices where water has pooled, softening the sharp geometric lines of the ancient masonry. A low haze hangs over the distant horizon, blurring the boundary between the jungle floor and the sky. The high-altitude light casts short, crisp shadows that define the depth of each stair tread. Lush ferns and broad leaves spill over the lower platforms, while the upper levels remain exposed to the relentless sun. at the edge is a cracked edge of limestone where a vine has wedged itself into the stone.
