Stepped Ziggurat Facade in Dappled Midday Light

by Theresa Duncan

Sunlight falls through the dense canopy of trees, casting a mosaic of bright patches and deep shadows across the massive, stepped limestone blocks of the ziggurat. The geometric rectangles of the facade rise sharply from the ground, their rough, weathered surfaces glistening with a thin film of moisture from the recent rain. Green leaves frame the upper corners, their veins sharp against the bright sky, while the humid air hangs heavy over the formal civic plaza below. Wet stone absorbs the light, creating dark recesses within the deep crevices of the steps, against the bright, saturated green of the overhanging foliage. One water droplet rests on the edge of the lowest visible block, trembling slightly before sliding into the shadow.
