Crumbling Aqueduct Stair in Vine Choked Dakar Corridor

by Presley McCarthy

Pale limestone steps cut directly into a steep hillside form a fractured staircase, its edges worn smooth by centuries of erosion. Thick green vines drape heavily over the stone blocks, intertwining with dry, brittle branches that rest on the crumbling masonry. A low layer of fog hovers just above the ground, softening the base of the corridor while the setting sun casts a deep orange glow across the upper surfaces of the rock. The light highlights the rough texture of the weathered stone and the glossy sheen on the leaves. In the distance, the horizon blurs into a haze of violet and burnt gold, while a single loose slab of stone rests precariously on the third step from the bottom, casting a long, dark shadow across the dust below.
