Yeti Crab Farming Bacteria on Kelp Shelf

by Frank Curtis

Pale, hair-covered claws of a yeti crab extend forward, densely coated with white bacterial filaments that catch the faint rim light. The creature rests on a rocky shelf lined with dark green kelp fronds swaying in the current. Deep shadow envelops the foreground, while a soft, grayish haze of plankton diffuses the distant background. Fine particles drift weightlessly through the water, illuminated by the first light penetrating the depths. The texture of the crab's setae contrasts with the smooth, glistening surfaces of the surrounding rocks. One bacterial strand hangs from the tip of a claw, catching the dim glow against the murky blue-green water.
