Winter Ice Cores Beside Dome in Whitehorse

by Dolores Day

Thick white mist rests on the ground, softening the edges of cylindrical ice cores arranged in a precise row on the frozen earth. Three translucent blue-and-white segments rest on dark metal stands, their surfaces etched with faint horizontal bands of trapped snow and dust. Behind them, the curved metallic dome of an observatory rises from the snow, its silver panels reflecting the flat, pale light of a late afternoon. The ground is a sheet of packed white ice, leading toward the vanishing point where the mist swallows the horizon. The cold air remains still, visible only in the way the fog hangs low against the dark tent fabric and the rigid geometry of the scientific equipment.
