Winter Tundra Ice Wedge Patterns at Dawn
by Juan Meza
Pale morning light washes over a vast expanse of tundra, revealing a precise network of ice wedge polygons etched into the frozen ground. The terrain stretches flat and unbroken under a birds eye perspective, where geometric cracks form dark lines against the stark white snow. Heat shimmer rises in wavering lines from the surface, distorting the sharp edges of the ice ridges slightly. The scene shows the dead of winter with a cold, desolate clarity, where the texture of the snow feels rough and granular. In the distance, the faint outlines of salt ponds and causeways appear as subtle gray bands, against the bright white of the ice patterns. The horizon blurs into the soft gray of the nautical dawn sky, leaving the polygonal grid as the sole focus of the composition. A thin layer of frost coats the highest ridges of the ice wedges, catching the first light.
