Blue Ice Cave in Winter Floodplain Near Sapporo
by Pauline Cobb
A cavern of dense blue ice opens beneath a flat, overcast sky. The entrance reveals layers of compressed snow and ice, glowing with a cool, electric hue that contrasts against the gray mud of the surrounding floodplain. Wet earth stretches outward, reflecting the low-hanging clouds in dull, silver patches. The ground is hard and frozen, marked by shallow tracks and scattered stones. Sunlight, though bright, offers no warmth, casting sharp, short shadows that define the jagged edges of the ice walls. Inside the cave, the light shifts from deep azure to translucent white where the ice thins. A thin layer of frost lines the upper arch, catching the flat glare and sparkling briefly before fading into the gloom of the interior. The blue glow intensifies near the back wall, where the ice is thickest.
