Aerial View Alluvial Fan Colombia Valley

by Harley Romero

Sunlight flattens the landscape into a stark geometric map. An alluvial fan spreads its sediment fingers across the valley floor, branching from the steep, terraced hillsides that rise in the upper third of the frame. The terraces cut sharp, parallel lines into the earth, creating a textured mosaic of earth tones ranging from ochre to deep umber. Heat shimmers distort the air just above the dry riverbed, blurring the edges of the fan's gravelly deposits. The lighting is direct and harsh, eliminating soft shadows and showing the precise angles of the geological formation. Darker patches of vegetation rest on the water channels, against the pale, baked soil of the fan's surface. A distinct line of shadow from a distant ridge cuts across the lower right corner, at the base of the vast expanse in sharp relief.
